United Way of Montcalm County

Mid-Michigan Industries

Karen is a young woman who lives in Montcalm County and is a relatively recent high school graduate. When Karen was in high school she was diagnosed with cancer. At a time when Karen should have been able to focus on her studies and her career path, she needed to put all of her energies in healing her body and fighting the cancer.

In the summer of 2008 Karen participated in MMI’s United Way Career Exploration Curriculum. When Karen first started she admitted that she didn’t even know what career exploration was. She also shared with us that even though she had spent the past two years taking basic computer and office classes at Montcalm Community College, she had no real career goal and really wasn’t interested in the path she was on.

Throughout the 12 week curriculum, Karen learned how to explore all types of careers and came to the realization of the importance of a career goal. Karen was able to develop a short and long term goal. She discovered a career path that she is now very passionate about. Karen is a woman who likes to help others and has decided that she wants to work with cancer patients as a social worker.

In January 2009, Karen began taking classes that will help her reach her ultimate career goal. Karen is also seeking employment locally in a hospital setting to give her the experience she will need to reach her ultimate career goal.  Without United Ways funding for the Career Exploration Curriculum, she may have never realized her true passion.
